CHAPTER 11

Small towns were great. No matter what you needed, someone provided it even when you didn’t want them to. In this case, someone called the dispatch, and guess who showed up? Matthew Strickland.

“Why am I not surprised you couldn’t stay home?” he asked Millie Kay while the EMTs checked out her noggin and wrapped a huge Ace bandage around her head.

“Is that necessary?” Millie Kay chirped and smacked away an EMT’s hand. “And you”—she pointed at Matthew—“you need to find out who did this to me.”

“To you?” he questioned then clenched his jaw. He fidgeted as though he were trying to keep his composure. “Is it my fault that you left your house when you were released strictly under house arrest and didn’t drive off the curb correctly?”

“Drive off the curb?” Mama spat.

I stood behind Matthew with my mouth wide open, wildly waving my hands for Mama to stop talking.

The whites of her eyes darted past Matthew’s shoulder. Being the observant man he was, he twisted his chin and gazed back at me.

“What?” I jerked my arms out of the air and folded them. “Mama’s night blind.”

“I was on their hides!” Mama shouted. “If it weren’t for that dumb curb, I’d probably have run right over them.”

“Mama,” I gasped, my eye twitching.

“You were chasing someone?” Matthew sucked his cheeks in, and he lifted his hand and pointed to Mama. “Take her into custody,” he told the deputy with him.

“Dad…” Darren stepped up.

“Don’t, son. There’s no amount of explaining why on earth Millie Kay was trying to run someone down after we found strong evidence of her killing someone. We can’t have her running around town.”

“She wasn’t running around town.” It was time to come clean, even though I really wanted to collect any clues from the office kitchen. I needed to see if I could pinpoint just who I’d gotten a little too close to in my investigation if they felt like they could break into my office to see what I had.

“That’s right. If you aren’t going to do your job, someone’s got to.” Mama wasn’t doing herself any favors by refusing to stop talking and let me handle it. “It’s bad enough you’ve got the wrong suspect. Now you’re ignoring the breaking into the office where my daughter has all the scoop on the real suspects as the journalist for the Junction Journal. After all, she’s got Frances’s briefcase. There’s more clues in there than the little bunny that killed Frances.”

“You’ve got Frances’s briefcase?” That was the question Matthew had after Mama told him about the break-in.

Mama was like a freight train. She just kept coming at a barreling speed.

“Did you not open up your ears and hear what I said, Math-ewww?” The usual two-syllable name was drawn out into a few more syllables with Mama’s accent to boot. “Someone knows that briefcase contains secrets, and that means they will do anything, like break into the Junction Journal office, to get it so they aren’t exposed as the real killer.
